Free as a bird

Finally, you can figure out where all those blockbuster movies are coming from without spending a dime. Saturday, May 3rd marks the Seventh Annual Free Comic Book Day, where retailers give out over two million copies to anyone who bothers to stop by their stores. If you're afraid of those creepy Comic Book Guys, you can also get your sequential art swag at Sarasota County's Fruitville Library (noon-3 p.m., sponsored by Pop Comics and Games) or the North County Library (10 a.m.-noon, sponsored by The Dark Side). North County will have local artist Kent Bonifield on hand to show young and old how it's done. Dozens of different comics from all the major and minor publishers -- from Marvel to DC -- will be available. Did we mention that they're free? Sat., May 3, The Dark Side, 408 S. Washington Blvd., 363-0840 or darksidecomics.com; Pop Comics and Games, 4333 S. Tamiami Trail, 925-0833 or pop-comics.com; Helen's Books and Comics, 1531 Main St., 955-2989 or comicbookday.com, free.
