If Rip Taylor was a painter

State College of Florida's fine art gallery is going way contemporary with the opening of its new exhibit, John Hampshire: Expressive Eccentricities. Hampshire combines confetti-like paint strokes with static, formal portraits to create unique abstract faces full of color. SCF has also invited Hampshire to discuss his art form with students in an effort to present the community with examples of cutting-edge trends in contemporary art. As an assistant professor of studio art at Adirondack Community College in New York, the artist is no stranger to lectures. The New York Times once called Hampshire "a virtuoso with a brush." Opening reception 6-8 p.m. Fri., Nov. 13, regular hours 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Mon.-Fri. through Dec. 17, SCF Bradenton, 5840 26th St. W., Bradenton, 752-5225 or scf.edu, free.
