Is nuclear power part of Florida's energy future?...

After a long slumber, the beast that is nuclear power has once again shaken off the dust of history and is prowling the American political landscape. Progress Energy Florida plans to build two new nuclear power plants about two hours north of Sarasota. The state has already approved the plants, but federal approval will likely take three to four years. Nuclear power was supposed to be the peace dividend of The Manhattan Project. We built the bombs that ended World

Any wisdom you may have thought that you accrued during high school or even or this past summer ain't worth a bucket of warm Rolling Rocks. You have, for reasons unbeknownst to us here at Creative Loafing, chosen to spend your college years in Sarasota, a city best known as a consistent winner of AARP's "Most

Here at Creative Loafing, we all look back on our college years, especially the seven that food critic Brian Ries put in, with great and warm affection. It was with those warm fuzzy memories, or was it foggy memories, that we all wanted to offer a brief bit of advice to those starting out on their collegiate journey. Jonathan Maziarz, editor: Don't be afraid to try new things, but fer Gawd's sake, don't ever listen to most of the things

I have to constantly remind myself that our home is built on what was once wild land. The birds and other critters were there first, so when they encroach on what we've staked out as our space, I try to maintain my sense of humor. The house we rented in Sarasota could be most accurately described as a place that was formerly luxurious, but has since gone to seed. The owners slapped up a fresh coat of paint, but really,

What do the citizens of New Orleans, China and Myanmar have in common? They have all felt the outstretched hand of ShelterBox, a United Kingdom and Lakewood Ranch-based aid group. Founded in 1999 by former Royal Navy search and rescue diver Tom Henderson as a project for his Rotary Club in Helton-Lizard, ShelterBox provides relief kits packed into plastic tubs. The 100-plus pound kits contain vital supplies for creating shelter (a tent), cooking food, purifying water and entertaining small children.

Nothing but beautiful blue-green water all the way to the horizon. Go ahead and wade in. Look down. Even on the busiest of days, you'll see fish, crustaceans and other sea creatures darting around. This looks like a healthy, thriving ecosystem. OK, get out of the water.

The future of spring training baseball in Sarasota has been the subject of a wide-ranging and, as yet, inconclusive, debate in the city. Here's what we know: • The Cincinnati Reds have been playing spring training games at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota since 1989. They are leaving Florida's Grapefruit League for the lower-humidity confines of Arizona's Cactus League starting in 2010. • Local agitators immediately raised the idea of stealing the Boston Red Sox, who are currently ensconced in

It may have only been two years since the bird rescue operation closed, but Mother Nature has moved quickly to reclaim the property. One woman, Lee Fox, is battling to get the bird sanctuary back up and running. She needs a lot of help. I am not going to cover the checkered past of the sanctuary,

Paper or plastic? We hear the question every time we go to the grocery store. Most people choose plastic, and since the bags are cheaper for grocery chains, the choice is encouraged by most baggers, "Plastic OK today?" The bags however, are an environmental disaster. They are especially harmful to aquatic life and, unfortunately, while floating in the water, mimic the preferred prey of many sea turtles, jellyfish. Most people have a profound indifference to what they discard. It gets

It's time for Sarasota County to do the right thing and leave Midnight Pass in peace. Midnight Pass was once a channel in Little Sarasota Bay. In 1983, what remained of the increasingly unnavigable pass was bulldozed shut -- with the permission of the county -- to protect nearby homes being threatened by beach erosion. Since then, the area has flourished and become important wildlife habitat. The tidal currents have also caused sand to pile up on the beaches of

The housing crisis, fueled by a massive load of ill-advised subprime loans, continues to deepen nationwide. The Sarasota-Bradenton area is, unfortunately, one of the centers of destruction wrought by this epidemic of predatory lending. It is beginning to destroy home values and it is only going to get worse. In a report in the Wall Street Journal last week, as of the fourth quarter of 2007, this area had 5.3 percent of its properties in foreclosure. Property values had dropped
