The Asolo Rep delivers sly, but slight, senior laughs in Murderers....

        By Mark E. Leib

Anyone who goes to the Asolo Rep with any regularity is used to the idea that the audience there is made up mostly of seniors. Oh sure, there's the occasional teenybopper or middle-aged couple, but the sea of white hair one notices before the lights go down is too obvious to ignore: The elderly, it seems, are Sarasota's most fervent theatergoers. Maybe it's because these seasoned citizens grew up before television and the Internet stole theater's crowds away; maybe it's

The Asolo Rep tackles George Bernard Shaw's The Devil's Disciple, with tremendous results....

        By Mark E. Leib

It's always rewarding to see a familiar actor shine in an unexpected way. I've watched James Clarke play so many brash and raffish characters at the Asolo Rep over the last 10 years, I would never have imagined him as a pure-hearted, deeply believing man of the cloth. But in George Bernard Shaw's The Devil's Disciple, Clarke plays Pastor Anthony Anderson, a good and honest minister, and he plays him so successfully, he makes goodness seem muscular, and religion a

Despite opposition from pro-life groups, Ringling College will open a gallery in the Rosemary District's new Planned Parenthood facility....

        By Barbara Ann Weibel

After months of waiting and speculation, construction is finally underway on the ground floor retail space at the new Planned Parenthood headquarters on north Central Avenue. The vacant storefront will soon be transformed into madeby, a gallery featuring an eclectic assortment of one-of-a-kind and limited-edition works created by students and alumni of Ringling College of Art and Design. Although merchants in the Rosemary District welcome the gallery, not everyone is happy about it. Members of a local right-to-life group have

Don Donohue gives the definitive performance of one of Shakespeare's most puzzling characters in the Asolo Rep's production of Winter's Tale....

        By Mark E. Leib

Every few years or so I see an actor perform Shakespeare with such skill and intelligence that I want to alert all lovers of theater to hurry and see for themselves. Now it's happened again: I've just watched Dan Donahue play Leontes in The Winter's Tale, and I can't imagine anyone else -- certainly no other American -- doing a better job. The feat is more admirable because Leontes is a problem character, one who shifts from good humor to

New Arts Council Executive Director Russell Crumley navigates the tricky world of tax dollar and artists' needs....

        By Kevin Costello

Quality of life means different things to different people. Bread and butter issues like health services and educational needs usually find common ground when the dust has settled around competing interests. How to find unilateral agreement on prioritizing funding the arts -- with local tax dollars, state or federal grants or philanthropic giving -- is a much more daunting prospect. It requires the judgment of King Solomon for any arts administrative body to come out of such deliberations untarnished by
