Ray LaMontagne: portrait of a private artist....

        By Eric Snider

He's been called introverted, intensely private, interview-shy, even reclusive, yet here is singer/songwriter Ray LaMontagne talking to me by phone from a Cleveland hotel room. I'm asking questions, he's answering. With pauses. He speaks just above a whisper, a sort of gentle murmur that belies the raspy bite in his singing voice. LaMontagne attributes much of his social awkwardness to a childhood that was transient and impoverished. His mother, he says, "had a really, really, really, really difficult childhood --

The band plays hardcore, ass-shakin' funk hits -- "Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)," "One Nation Under a Groove," et al -- and Clinton leads, though I've heard he's not always all there, if you know what I mean. --Leilani Polk KROAKY'S Kroaky's Rock Band Challenge

Some of the bright lights of Sarasota rock depart for a vegetable oil-fueled mini-tour....

        By Michael Hamad

The bands may stop at typical underground rock destinations like Gainesville, Atlanta and North Carolina, but the Epic Future Tour is hardly your normal pile-into-the-van DIY road tour. For starters, there's no van: The Econoline has been replaced by a vegeatable oil-burning school bus. And second, the the itenerary includes out-of-the-way stops at venues like the Bernie Mac Memorial Museum in Philadelphia -- which, perhaps not surprisingly, isn't an actual museum at all, but rather a punk house with two

By the time she released her sixth solo album — Stories From the City, Stories From the Sea — Polly Jean Harvey had pretty much stretched her sound in every direction it could logically go. 1992's Dry was her fully formed indie-encapsulating debut; 1993's Rid of Me her Steve Albini-produced exploration of caterwauling noise; 4-Track Demos her raw, immediate bedroom snapshot; 1995's To Bring You My Love her confident, theatrical blues masterstroke; 1998's Is This Desire? her electronica-dabbling incorporation of

Giving Hunger the Blues and Caravan of the Beautiful delight your ears this week....

        By Cooper Levey-Baker

Last year's Giving Hunger the Blues brought in $100,000 for local hunger-beating charities, and this one will probably rake in a comparable total, thanks to event headliner Syesha Mercado. Syesha, as I'm sure you'll recall, is the Booker High grad who made it large and came in third on season seven of American Idol. These days, she spends most of her days out in Los Angeles, hard at work on her debut pop disc, and dips back into town every

THURSDAY, April 16 CAFÉ RUELLE Chakulla CROWBAR -- JOSH KELLY AND RYAN CABRERA W/TIM BRANTLEY/BRANDON WHYDE Kelly and Cabrera co-headline this alt-pop tour of barely above-average talent. Cabrera plays guitar and piano and sings love songs in a sexy whine. He currently has two chart-topping albums under his belt, though his fourth, 2008's The Moon Under Water, was a chart flopper. Singer/songwriter Josh Kelly has more of an edge, infuses his music with a bit of alt-country bounce and faux-twang,
